How to use an FPS estimate when choosing a GPU
Frame rate is the single most visible measure of gaming performance, but a single number hides a lot. Here is how to read these estimates honestly:
- Match FPS to your monitor. A 60Hz monitor shows at most 60 FPS; buying a card for 144 FPS only pays off with a 144Hz (or higher) display. Check your monitor's refresh rate first.
- 1080p is still the mainstream. The Steam Hardware Survey consistently shows 1080p as the most common resolution; 1440p is growing, 4K remains a minority. Choose your resolution budget before comparing GPU numbers.
- Preset beats resolution for comfort. Dropping from Ultra to High typically buys 30โ40% more FPS at a visual cost most people barely notice in motion.
- CPU limits you too. At 1080p, many games are CPU-bound. Pairing an RTX 5070 with an old quad-core leaves performance on the table.
- Upscaling changes the picture. DLSS / FSR / XeSS render at a lower internal resolution and upscale โ effectively a free FPS multiplier on supported titles. These estimates assume native rendering.
