Trade sharpness for frames with render scaling
A new game stutters at native resolution — drop render scaling first and reclaim frames before you buy a new GPU.
A new title drops, you crank it to native 1440p for the pretty screenshots, and then the gunfight stutters at 38 FPS. Your first instinct is to shop for a new graphics card — but before you spend $600, there is a free setting already in the game that can hand you back 30+ frames: render scaling.
What resolution scaling actually does
Render scaling shrinks the internal resolution the game draws, then upscales it to your monitor. It is not the same as lowering your display resolution, and the math is non-linear: at 75% scale the game renders roughly 56% of native pixels, and at 50% it is only 25%. Fewer pixels means far less GPU work, which usually means more FPS, at the cost of some sharpness.

- Start at 100% and note your FPS.
- Drop to 90%, then 80%, re-checking FPS each step.
- Stop at the highest scale that holds your target frame rate — usually 75–85% is the sweet spot.
If lowering scale still leaves you short, the GPU itself is the bottleneck. Compare where your card sits before committing to an upgrade.
